Woman, 20, dies after undergoing hair transplant in India
NEW DELHI — A 20-year-old Indian woman has died after undergoing a hair transplant from a local donor in New Delhi.
The patient, who is identified as Shilpa Devi, was on her way to a hair salon on Thursday afternoon to have her hair cut and underwent the procedure, a senior police officer said.
Police officials said they were trying to determine the exact cause of the patient’s death.
The death comes amid an ongoing campaign to improve India’s hairdressers, which is among the poorest in the world.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has called for an investigation into the case.
The IMA, which represents some of India’s top hairdressing doctors, said in a statement that it had no comment on the patient.
In recent years, India has been on the front lines of hair transplantation campaigns.
The country’s top three hairdresses are owned by the country’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
Last year, two patients died after their hairdression procedures.
