How you can help women get back to their best | BBC News
A new study from the University of British Columbia (UBC) suggests that a little-known procedure could help women recover from breast augmentation.
The study, published in the International Journal of Plastic Surgery, involved nearly 2,000 women aged 18-44 who had been breast augmented.
They then had their hair removed.
The women were asked to rate their feelings of wellbeing, the number of new hairstyles they wanted to adopt and how much time they had spent living without their hair.
“For women who had undergone breast augments, we found that their hair was more comfortable and their hair quality improved after the procedure,” says senior author Jessica Haddad, an assistant professor of psychology at UBC.
“It was very exciting to see that it actually made them feel happier.”
Haddaid says it’s important to note that the study was done before the popularity of breast implants exploded and now more women are undergoing them.
The results show that women who were initially dissatisfied with their hair after surgery are now happier, she says.
“They now have a new haircut and feel much better about their hair.”
Haddon also points out that the results don’t mean that the procedure is completely safe.
“We didn’t measure anything about the safety of the procedure or whether or not the women’s hair was as well as they thought it was,” she says, adding that there are still many unknowns about the effects of the procedures.
One thing that is certain, though, is that the women in the study felt a positive boost after undergoing the procedure.
Haddadd says there are currently a number of ways that women can get back on their feet after their hair has been removed.
One of them is to do hair transplants.
“If a woman has a condition called polydactyly, where she can’t control how much she grows her hair, or if she has a hair transplant, then that could be a way to help with recovery,” Haddon says.
Another option is to try to keep the hair off the body for as long as possible, such as by cutting it out or by waxing it.
Hair removal is also a popular way to give women a lift and to relieve stress.
The procedure is still a fairly new one in the beauty world, but Haddon hopes it will become a common one for women.
“Many people have hair removal in their family history and we hope that this study will inspire more women to have the surgery and hopefully that it helps to prevent recurrence,” she adds.
